Understanding the five-year cost of VR.
Compare hardware, teacher supervision, and IT time using the supplied five-year cost calculator.
Why total cost matters
Headset price is only one part of the equation.
You buy a printer for your school. It is complicated, so you also need a facilitator. To understand the true cost, you need to look at the price of the printer, ink costs, and the cost of a facilitator. If you don’t, you have no understanding of the true cost. This is the reality of school administration.
Using a gaming 6 DoF device significantly increases the personnel time. A champion teacher, who spends hundreds of hours forcing a consumer product into education, must be accounted for. So, too, IT staff burdened with moving content, setting up 3rd party MDM software, updates, and so on.
Simple comparison
Simple 5-Year VR Cost Comparison
Same learning output. Same time horizon. The difference is human time.
For this country, the calculator uses an IT rate of $46.50/hr, equal to 75% of the selected teacher rate.
Built-in assumptions
- Five-year time horizon, 15-minute learning blocks, and 4,320 blocks per device each year.
- Gaming use is modelled at one teacher supervising two devices.
- Class Lab use is modelled at one teacher for 30 students, with teacher time shared at 1/30 and 180 IT hours each year.
- SVR modelled teacher and IT labour costs are $0. IT cost is 75% of the selected teacher rate.
| Five-year comparison | Gaming (6 DoF) | Class Lab (3 DoF) | SVR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware (5 years) | $2,000 | $2,000 | $5,063 |
| Teacher hours (5 years) | 10,800 | 720 | 0 |
| IT hours (5 years) | 300 | 900 | 0 |
| Total cost (5 years) | $685,550 | $88,490 | $5,063 |
